We have a deep heritage in building businesses responsibly.
Sustainability is an important tool in our value creation approach, enabling us to partner with strong businesses and create long-term, sustainable value.
Heritage and leadership
Our industry leading sustainability program has its roots in the UN supported Principles for Responsible Investment, which we signed in 2009. We began formal requirements in diligence and early ownership in 2012.
Since then, our programme has gone from strength to strength, including becoming the first buyout firm to commit to the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) in 2021, launching an innovative internal carbon pricing programme, and actively participating in industry projects such as the Private Markets Decarbonization Roadmap (PMDR).
Our approach
Our approach to sustainability is directly tied to our principal focus – delivering superior returns. We take a tailored, through-the-lifecycle approach, focused on identifying where material value can be created or protected.
Starting from due diligence, our deal teams assess potentially material environmental and social issues alongside our internal sustainability function. Their findings are summarised and provided for Investment Committee consideration. When we close a deal, we implement essential recommendations and provide ongoing support. Our companies report their performance against KPIs each year, which we send to each respective board. Our own sustainability report contains case studies of our approach in action.
Value creation
Sustainability is one of the specialisations of our Portfolio Operations team, and is led by Colin Etnire, our Head of Sustainability. The Portfolio Operations team is focused on helping create value throughout the lifecycle of a partnership by applying their functional expertise in proactive, bespoke, and transformational ways.
BC Partners Foundation
The Foundation’s main charitable activity focuses on providing employee matching grants and supporting charities proposed by the employees of BC Partners or Trustees of the BC Partners Foundation.
